Yachting Work Experience

MY Pegaso
Two and a half years as deckhand and watch leader on Pegaso, a 160ft luxury motor yacht.

I joined the boat in Palma, Majorca where it was undergoing extensive refit work. The owner who was a passionate diver, and the occasional charters took us around the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Pacific, Atlantic and the Sea of Cortez. My duties included assisting in all aspects of the running and maintenance of the yacht Manning the custom tender and jet boat, supervising guests in the use of the jests and sailing dingy, and aiding in all aspects of the dives taken aboard.

My time aboard came to an end two and a half years later, when it was sold to a new owner.

"Myles has proved himself to be loyal, hard working and competent and any task assigned to him he would carry out quickly and efficiently through to it's completion."
-Michael Wasilewski Captain of MY Pegaso

Broadreach
Broadreach is an American based company that provides adventure holidays for children between the ages of 13 and 18. Click here for the main Broadreach Web site. The two courses on which I was a skipper were the Underwater Discoveries (UWD) and the Underwater Discoveries Advanced (UDA).

I was a skipper for Broadreach in the Caribbean for the full 1999 summer season (6th June to 27th August 1999). This included staff training in the US, set-up in St Martin, 3 programs (2 UWD & 1 UDA), and shut down.

The sailing itineraries involved cruising between numerous dive sites around the islands of St Martin, St Barts, Nevis, Statia and Saba. On each four week trip I had up to 11 students and 2 diving instructors aboard, none of whom had any previous sailing experience. During the trips I taught sailing and leadership skills, assisted with the diving tuition, and taught the students water-skiing and wake-boarding using the yachts 55hp RIB.

As well as the Customs, immigration, and re-provisioning practices of that part of the Caribbean, the trips gave me a good insight to the many dive sites, anchorage's, and moorings of the islands.

During my time with Broadreach I was the only skipper to have a 100% attendance and pass rate of the ASA sailing exam and my boats never missed a dive.

"You are probably the strongest co-lead I've ever worked with on program… it was fantastic to have someone I could really rely on to run the boat smoothly. Thanks for making this a fun and relaxing trip for me."
- Jim Sidthorpe dive instructor and Director of Broadreach.
